KayLynn Deveney / Edith and Len

December 2

They were to go to hair appoint-
ments together, but Len and Edith
had been fighting. Edith told me
about the quarrel quietly from
under the hairdryer. Len had
already let me know in his way
that something was up. · Edith said
they didn’t hit each other, but she
had a hand on each side of his face
and squeezed his head. She said
this was a bad quarrel, worse than
most. · Len said I didn’t know
how it was to have me there. I
asked, Good or bad? He said good—both—good and bad. · Len
asked if we were friends. He said he hoped we were friends forever. I wondered if he was really asking if a friend would write about and
photograph another friend
quarreling with his wife.
