KayLynn Deveney / Edith and Len

May 20
Two caregivers told me Edith
was feeling very rough. I asked
Edith if I should go or stay and
sit with Len so she could rest. She
asked me to stay. · In Edith’s chair
I listened to Len’s troubled
breathing and the faint whine of
Edith’s hearing aid. · Edith didn’t
rest long. She cried and told me
how exhausted she was. She said
she got angry with Len about not
letting her rest and then she
regretted it. She said she had
horrible thoughts. She thought of
walking out to the main road. She
wished they could both lie down
and close their eyes tonight and
that would be it. She was afraid
of Len outliving her, afraid he
wouldn’t be cared for. · Later,
Len reached for her. He leaned
his head towards hers. She held
him and cried. I sat next to them.
