KayLynn Deveney / Edith and Len

March 14

Len was very quiet today. When
I went to tell him goodbye he
seemed weak and dispirited. I
asked what was wrong and he
said, “Nothing is wrong.” I
kissed him. Edith followed me
out into the hall under the
pretence of looking for Bonnie,
the cat. When we were outside
she said Len hadn’t been doing
well at all. She said his thoughts
were wandering a lot. She said he
told her that when he went he
would try to go as quietly as
possible. She cried. I hugged her,
and as my head leaned against
hers I could hear all the small
sounds of the nursing home
through her bone-induction
hearing device. I listened as we
hugged, and she held my head
close for a moment.
