KayLynn Deveney / Return to Pie Town
In 1940 Farm Security Administration photographer Russell Lee visited Pie Town, New Mexico. Lee landed in Pie Town to explore this little patch in the desert that had become home to a population of Dust Bowl refugees seeking a new start. Among these homesteaders, Lee made images that spoke to their vibrance and their values, their struggle and their success.

When I began visiting Pie Town in 1996 it was my hope to check in again on the residents of this small town. I hoped to learn both something of their experiences living in Pie Town, and the special qualities of this arid spot in New Mexico that was still calling people home.
